Finding the Best DJ Headphones

Over the last five years the style of headphones as changed dramatically from tiny ear buds to the large DJ style headphones.  Thanks in large part to Dr. Dre’s Beats, celebrities such as Ludacris, Justin Beiber, Lebron James, DJ Paul D and others have joined the movement to the DJ headphones.lebron beats

While most of these headphones look cool, not all of them operate the same.   Our goal is to provide you with the information on the best DJ headphones on today’s market, so that you can make an educated decision on which ones to buy.  Most of the better headphones are relatively expensive, but we will tell you which ones to try out and which ones to avoid.

My name is Mike Patterson and I have worked for over 25 years in the music business.  I have owned and operated my own music shop over the years selling everything from handmade violins to complete DJ sets.   My niche now is more in the digital music business, selling everything from digital pianos to digital DJ systems.

Below we have made an interactive list of our top 10 DJ headphones on today’s market.  Due to the constant changing of today’s marketplace, we like to keep this list as dynamic as possible and add and delete headphones as we feel necessary.

Let’s take a look at the columns

As you can see we try to be as include as many different types of headphones to appeal to different users.  In the past DJ headphones were used solely as they sound, for DJs.  Now they are used for working out, walking around campus or just to have whenever you want to listen to music.   MP3 players, iPods and Cellular phones have become some of the most popular devices to carry music, with cell phones leading the charge over the last few years as an all in one tool.

How to Find the Best DJ Headphones for Your Needs

As an owner and operator of a music store I have seen the growth of headphones from purely a musician thing, to something that almost every teenager in the world now uses on a regular basis.  While ear buds still remain a popular choice for many, the large noise reduction headphones have surpassed them in popularity over the last few years.

Not all of these headphones are the same however, as for every Beats by Dre there are 10 knock off brands that try to emulate the outside appearance, but don’t come close in sound quality and volume.  Here is what we look at when trying to the #1 DJ headphones.

Sound Quality:   First and foremost we like to look at sound quality.  You can pretty much tell about 90% of what you need to know about a pair of headphones during the first 2 minutes that you put them on.  Ones that are cheaply made will always have poor volume and sound quality coming from them.   We see this lot in many of the $20 range headphones that try to emulate the popular headphones on the market.  They are jazzed up with cool colors, but their sound quality is horrible.

Noise Reduction:   A very good set of headphones should encompass your full attention and this means that with the volume on a high level, you wouldn’t be able to hear an airplane that was 50 feet over your head.    With the ability to block outside noises and focus purely on what is playing, this is something that only the best unit’s offer.   One of the tests that we like to do in our store when testing out headphones is to turn up the volume about halfway on the headphones and then blast a nearby speaker with music, if we can’t hear the speaker, then the headphone is doing its job.

Reviews:  Some of the worst quality products in the world have become massive sellers due to great marketing and sales pages.   We think one great way to avoid that problem is to read online reviews from buyers of the headphone that you are interested in purchasing.   We like to use Amazon for our reviews, as this is one of the few sites that verify the people who purchased the item and also has a large variety of people who will give honest reviews.

Price:   Price plays a huge role in not only the type of headphone you can afford, but what you should research.  While everyone would love to have the Pioneer HDJ-1500 Professional Headphones, not everyone can afford the $450+ price tag that comes with purchasing that item.  We like to choose a variety of headphones in different price ranges so that almost anyone looking to purchase these items can get quality reviews.   With that being said, we do not recommend any of the real cheap models online or at your local retailers, as these tend to be very low quality.

Purpose:  For those who are looking to getting into the DJ business, we will definitely have plenty models reviewed that are “DJ ready”,  for those who just need something to work out with or something to walk around campus with, we have those models too.  For those who might only want some that are great in noise reduction, but cost under $150, we will have the model just for you and unbiased reviews on that model.

Let’s Take a Look at Some of Our Favorites

When trying to find the best DJ headphones on today’s market, the research is much more advanced than it was even 10 years ago.  In the 1990s and 2000s, the trend for iPod and MP3 owners was on buying the coolest music players that they could find and usually just using the default headphones that came with the item.   Apple set this trend as they offered decent sounding ear buds with all of their iPod models.    While we still think these ear buds are ok, we love the way the market has changed and how the bigger headphones have taken off, as they truly are superior in quality to the ear buds.

Here is a list of some of our favorites

#1-  HiFiMan – HE-500 Headphones

Our pick for the best DJ headphones 2014 are the HiFiMan HE-500 headphones.  For anyone that is looking to become a serious DJ or just want the best possible headphones that they can find, we highly recommend the HiFiMan headphones.  With superb bass, awesome sounds quality and great noise cancelling these are the pick among the hottest DJs around.

When trying these out for the first time we were very skeptical because of all the hype that we had heard.  After trying them for just 30 seconds we were blown away of the sound and clarity of these phones.  Listening to the latest Bruno Mars album, we felt as if we were at his concert.   Dave, one of my employees, said it best when he described them as a “concert in your ear”.   Clarity is what separates these from all other headphones as you hear familiar songs differently due to how good the quality is on these headphones.

Sennheiser HD 650- Rated by as “the best headphone on the planet”, the Sennheiser HD 650 takes the #2 spot on our list of best headphones.  The battle between these headphones and the HiFiMan HE-500 headphones was almost dead even, as we had a vote between myself and several other employees and long time customers and the Sennheiser lost the battle 6-3, with the main difference being the louder volume that the HiFi can get to and still have great quality.

Sennheiser has been around for a long time and they make one of the most comfortable headphones around.   The great thing about these is that they are used by almost ever different type of user around.  Teenagers listening to rap music and Elderly people listening to their favorite “oldies” all love how these headphones sound.   When we tried these out, we liked the overall feel and comfort of these the most.  It felt almost relaxing to put them on, like two pillows on your ears.  The sound quality of these is exceptional too as it is crystal clear up to a very high volume.

V-MODA Crossfade M-100- When it comes to comfort the V-MODA M-100 comes with the most comfortable ear phones that we have found to date. The large padded leather on these phones is the reason why we rank these so high, as they truly do feel like heaven.  Almost everyone that tries these for the first time has the same “ooooo” reaction as they do truly feel good.  The one thing that a few of the people have complained about though is that they do get a little heavy if they are used for a long period of time.

One of our female customers uses these on a regular basis for jogging and working out and loves them.  She says that they have a feel quite like no other.    She was the first one in our store that we actually saw wearing these and we decided to give them a try ourselves.  We were excited at how well they fit and felt.  The one drawback of these is that the sound quality and volume are not nearly as powerful as the Sennheiser HD 650 or the HiFiMan HE-500, but being a few hundred dollars cheaper then both of those models, we expected that.   Overall we would highly recommend these as they are very comfortable and do have good volume and sound quality, just not elite like the others that we have reviewed.

Bose QuietComfort Noise Cancelling Headphones- When thinking of the best DJ headphones on the market today, one name came to our mind as one of the leaders of sound and speakers.  The Bose Company goes hand in hand with the best in the business as they have become famous for making great sounding home systems.  The Bose QuietComfort Noise Cancelling headphones are in line with the rest of their products as a great headphone for those who love their music.

I have a pair of these for my home and office sound systems and love both of them.   I use these on a daily basis for at least ½ hour a day as part of my “chilaxing” routine, where I put on some of my favorite music and just relax for a while.   The Bose QuietComfort headphones are great for those who love orchestra music or jazz as these allow you to escape to another world.   For those of you who have kids, lead a stressful life or just need some time alone, these are headphones that I definitely recommend.

Beats by Dr. Dre Mixer- By far and away the Beats by Dr. Dre are the most popular models among today’s young people.  From early teens through college, we see a ton of “kids” sporting these headphones today.   After seeing so many of today’s kids, I had to see for myself what all the hype was on these models.   After trying a few out, I can say I was really impressed and they live up to the hype.

I tried two different models out and the Beats by Dr. Dre Mixer series were the ones that appealed the most to me.   These headphones would be our pick for the best headphones for the market below $300 as they are truly a great product.   While they come in a variety of cool colors and style the reason for the high prices of these models come from the great sound quality and excellent clarity that these deliver.   As one of the greatest record producers and musicians of the last 25 years, Dr. Dre is not the type of guy to put his name on a piece of junk and he was sure that these were a good model.

Overall it is important for the person purchasing the item to get the best DJ headphones that they can afford.   While not everyone can afford those listed on our top 5 list, our goal was to give honest reviews of as many models as we could possibly test on today’s market.  Thank you for visiting our site and please continue to come back as we will constantly update our main chart and review more products.
